I find this “discussion” to be incredibly frustrating. Gary Francione very rudely interrupts Wayne Hsiung throughout, and then at the very end, has the nerve to comment that it is not an effective discussion because he has to wait for Wayne to finish making his points. THAT is the entire problem here. Some MAJOR no-no’s for effective communication include interrupting the speaker, and not trying to understand the speaker’s point of view before formulating and asserting your own. This is clearly demonstrated at the very end, when Gary suggests that Dxe’s position is to make people effective activists without them being vegan. Wayne and DxE NEVER made that assertion. Wayne was simply making the point that it is not enough just to go vegan, and that we need to do more and become activists and inspire others to also engage in activism. And this is something that you, Bob Linden, also have a whole speech about it. That speech is the one that first introduced me to you. So I’m still not sure what you have against DxE, as you actually want the same things. From where I sit, it just looks like you’re not effectively listening to what Wayne and DxE have to say.

  • From Diana Costa on 18 October 2015

Let the speakers finish their thoughts. We can tell the bullshit from the logical stuff. Francione makes sense but he needs to let others finish their sentences.

  • From chris on 18 October 2015

This sounds like a childish republican debate. I know vegans are passionate about the mission but its hard to “hear” anything when people are arguing and talking over each other. I wish vegans could take a higher road so that at the minimum they don’t turn off people to this very important mission.

  • From Susan Griffiths on 11 October 2015

At first Butterflies Katz found that vegan food did not taste that good, so part of her activism was to learn how to make vegan food taste good. I hadn’t looked at it this way, but now it is pointed out I realize I felt and did the same. I also like that Butterflies Katz pointed out that she doesn’t see vegan as a diet – rather it is an ethical way to live. And, apparently this is the first vegan radio show – didn’t know that. And the truth – virtually everything that is wrong with the world comes from the animal agricultural industry. This industry is spurned from greed and violence and causes social inequity, suffering to humans, animals and the planet.

Bob – love your show. Please take this as constructive criticism. You and Gary have to let these guys hang themselves. When Gary steps all over Webermann verbally he comes across as unsure of his own convictions as if they don’t stand on their own without being repeated. It also engenders our natural negative reaction against bullying behavior ( even though it may be justified by moral outrage).Have confidence that we, the listeners, get it. Its important for me anyway to hear the other side in its full gory (glory). I am left with only a partial feel for the absurdity of Webermann’s approach because Gary couldn’t control himself. This makes for very bad radio.

    Dear Bob,

This is Marilyn Wilson in Chewelah, Wa., I was a guest on your show a few years back along with Dr. Friedlander, I spoke about the importance of the SAFE Act, Safeguard American Foods Export Act, which will safeguard our foods against adulterated horsemeat, and ban the export of horses across the borders and shores for human consumption, also the SAFE Act would prevent the possible return of horse slaughter within the US. The SAFE Act unfortunately now resides in the AG committee where it will die if we can’t get the word out to people to please call their congress people and support this bill.

We were encouraged by the discovery of horse DNA in meat products in the US. This summer two researchers at Chapman University’s Food Science Program detected the presence of horse DNA in America’s food supply chain. In two separate studies on meat mislabeling both DNA-based studies discovered products that were labeled as one species but contained other species. 48 meat samples were tested 10 were mislabeled. Of those 10, nine were found to contain additional species. Horsemeat, illegal in the US was found in two of the samples.
Researcher Dr. Rosealee Hellberg stated that there has been limited research done in the US in light of the EU’s horsemeat scandal of 2012. To the researchers knowledge, the most recent US meat survey was published in 1995.
Please help get the word out, many news media’s refuse to take it on.
Thank you for your time. I always enjoy your enlightening show.

    Sincerely,
    Marilyn Wilson

  • From Paul Lebow on 06 September 2015

Would you consider a listener call-in segment? I am always interested in what vegans, other than the usual proponents, have to say. Would be good to get feedback from the community.

  • From Paul Lebow on 26 July 2015

One reason Wayne avoids promoting veganism is because it is too challenging a technique. Yelling slogans is easy but ineffective as a “primary” method. I agree with him, however, that the word “vegan” has been diluted, but so what? Its a simple matter of taking back the word and using our individual powers of persuasion and behavior to accomplish that. If its true that Direct Action does not place veganism at the top of its pyramid of strategies, then there is something inherently flawed with the organization.

  • From Catherine on 09 August 2015

Hi Bob, New listener here. Did you see the notes online about Dr. Ben using the title of doctor in error? Google brought up 2009 info about something that may not be exactly practicing med w/o license, but is close. Also, why does he use a pseudonym? I think it is good work his coming to people where they live with nutritional food and veganism, just wondered about finding this stuff online but not in your conversation with him. Great chance to clear things up for his part, I would think.

Hello, I just listened to the “interview” with Wayne Hsiung and Gary Francione and I have to say that I don’t think it was a fair discussion at all. I also have to say that I think Gary behaved like a bully, not an intellectual having a useful debate. I heard Wayne conducting himself quite graciously even though he was continually being talked-over and attacked.

  • From Barbara on Loving Homes Needed for Virginia Handley Dogs

I met Virginia in 1987 when I first became involved with animal rights. A group I was involved with, Animal Rights Connection, frequently held meetings in “The Fund’s” office. Every square inch of that office was about animals. I always had a good feeling when we went there, especially when Virginia was there. She worked tirelessly for the animals and is one of my heroes. I loved the Christmas parties she would organize annually for animal rights people and her Mom’s dancing performance. I always brought my Mom to these parties as she loved animals as much as any other animal rights activist. We always had a good time. I still maintain that animal rights people are some of the finest people that walk the face of the earth and will always have a special place in my heart. Thank you Virginia for all you did to help the animals.

Clinate change is real, people need to eat less meat or go vegan.

  • From sheree on 14 September 2014

Just started listening to some of your archive shows so this comment is rather late. Having grown up in a ‘christian’ home, I could never figure out why compassion for animals was something that just ‘wasn’t done’ in the church. Jesus himself broke the Sabbath when saving an animal in a ditch and he drove out the money changers b/c of the animal sacrifice going on in the temple (and was widely criticized for both). And Jesus always seemed to use animals in his stories to drive home this idea of love and mercy. If we are to be ‘more like Christ’ wouldn’t it behoove Christians to show mercy and love towards all beings?

Regarding Abraham sacrificing his son, what merciful loving God would ever require any type of sacrifice? Jesus himself said, “I require mercy not sacrifice” and God, in the old testament, said, “I do not delight in the blood of bulls…”

I believe the church has a responsibility to lead the way towards mercy and justice but they would rather spend their time needling scripture to death. They should speak out against corporations that destroy the planet, destroy the lives of people and animals and that create such a system of unjustness that we have children being enslaved to pick cocoa beans to name just one of many.

I stopped going to church when I was 16 b/c I was given the choice. Perhaps that ‘fate’ was sealed when I was told at age 10 that animals wouldn’t be in Heaven. At that time, all I could think was that if my cat couldn’t go I didn’t want to go either.

apologies for the rant and some fuzzy remembrance of bible scripture

  • From Colleen on Mercy For Animals' Killers?

I keep trying to listen to your program, but find myself unable to because of the vituperation that you direct, weekly, against others in the animal rights community. I know what I’m saying is nothing new and will be likely dismissed. I am 56, vegan for 2 years, spurred on by the undercover videos by the likes of mfa. It was also an awakening to compassion by those who tread this path. These groups are getting the message out-obviously the result we all want and proclaim will not happen through diatribe. Is it not possible to see and acknowledge the good these people do? We need all the voices we can get, to spread the word–not commandments from on high from a select few. Preaching to the choir may rally the concerted but will not move the masses. I’m just sad, I guess, that those who do the most harm, through ignorance and blind appetite for profit are not first and foremost the objects of your message. Can we not stand together as a movement and at least have a constructive dialogue? I appreciate your voice and commitment, but I see value in those others who are joined in this struggle. Thank you, Colleen Higgins

Give em HELL Bob! I’m a new listener and just celebrated my 2nd all vegan Thanksgiving. I have converted my mom, my partner, and more than a few of my friends and plan on veganizing the world! I work for Publix in Florida and thanks to my constant bitching and complaining have made them change their 60+ year tradition of giving the associates a $5 off coupon for a murdered turkey we now have a choice between that or a $5 off coupon towards a cruelty-free Tofurky roast. The coolest part is that in my store alone there were 43 employees that chose the Tofurky! I know that it’s probably not that big of a triumph but I know of a few that said that they would eat more of the cruelty-free stuff instead of the dead alternative. I constantly have customers ask me how I’ve lost just under 150 lbs. That when I get em interested in the whole Vegan eating thing. Before they know it I hit them with the Earthlings Movie thing and more time than not they realize that there is no turning back! Thanks again Bob for all you do.

  • From Marvin on 16 November 2014

Simply love your show and your upbeat style, especially when dealing with difficult topics.

I am totally vegan but I’ve been vegetarian / near vegan for roughly 35 years, which has made for some interesting family events. One of these you might find of interest. In the 1980’s my parents lived in Pasadena, Ca. At that time they managed an apartment building.

My father had serious heart disease which was addressed using open heart surgery. Neither parents were vegetarian or vegan, and certainly did not understand my diet or lifestyle.

While dad was in hospital I went to California it help my mother manage their building. While there I sought out vegetarian restaurants. What I found was a unique drive thru vegetarian restaurant in on Lake Ave in Pasadena.

You can find them here http://www.yelp.ca/biz/orean-the-health-express-pasadena

While dad was in hospital mom and I would go out for lunch everyday. We would drive to the vegetarian place first, where I would order my lunch. Then I would drive to the Burger King on the opposite corner where we would go in so mom could order her burger combo.

We would sit there day after day, me eating vegan, mom eating her burger. Aside from being vegan, mine lunch was always better in taste and value.

The irony of this weird lunch arrangement was not lost on me. Knowing as I did that my dad’s heart surgery could have been avoided if only he’d eaten a more healthy diet – all the while watching mom chow down on a burger.

It was at times a moment of high strangeness. But I digress from my original point.

At the time of my original discovery Orean’s advertised being the original and only vegan drive thru. The building at that location was an A-Frame structure, which I suspect had been another conventional drive through restaurant. The design gave it the appearance of the famous Snoopy Dog house from the Peanuts cartoon strip. Realizing that fact my mother so dubbed it as Snoopy’s Dog House – which amused us both.

I think it would be wonderful if you could feature this place on one of your broadcasts. It certainly must have an interesting back story. So far as I can tell it is still in operation.

Also, warmest Guy Fawkes night, 5th November, ever in the UK. There is no such thing as ‘climate change’. It is now called ‘climate changed’. But it’s ok to stop promoting veganism, it will all be ok. Also, what animal loving and vegan promoting organisations are there left for me to join that actually promote veganism Bob? Also, when will computers recognise the word veganism?

  • From Richard darthbuzz Loughlin on 10 August 2014

OK, I did not know about the second show and now that I have heard Gary say that all the money put into all these societies were to go into promoting Veganism as the ONLY way to go, I cannot agree more. Stop pussy footing around, show EARTHLINGS to everyone, show it in schools, and then we will turn all vegan over night. None of this pandering to the meat industry,it is just what they want. Surely if there is a big problem with the planet, and it is getting worse, our message MUST be stronger, not watered down with supposed animal loving groups, 1 by 1 getting in bed with the pain, torture, rape and murder we are trying to STOP. I am so pis***d off with this little girl attitude you would not believe. JUST GO VEGAN!

  • From Sa Del Russi on 09 November 2014

    Greetings Mr. Linden,
I wanted to take a second to express haw appreciated your broadcast is and how desperately necessary it is as well. One wishes you were on the air for at least eight hours a day(I’m sure you’d just love that.)
Not only is the Vegan message the elephant in the room(I personally am a very low keyed individual but have caused many a so called “progressive” to squirm without saying more than a few words) but your delivery is very entertaining. You have an excellent radio demeanor. I suppose Tom Hartman should cool it for a second with the know it all attitude and take the time to listen to you if he wishes to live up to his self proclaimed “progressive” persona. At any rate thank you for all you do. My only wish would be that there could be many more of you to go around. It was one thing in the old days when people kept themselves in blind ignorance to the plight of Animals but here in the “information age” there is no excuse for using Animals for any reason whatsoever. We humans are guilty of any number of atrocities throughout our dubious history but those perpetrated against the Animals are the blackest of the black among our dark deeds. Many thanks to you and I wish you and everyone important to you (Animals included, of course) a very happy, healthy and blessed holiday. Sincerely, Sam Del Russi.

    Mr X is a HERO.
I’ve just listened to the recent show (I live in the UK) and I have to try to tell you how moving I found Mr X’s story. I cannot express how much respect and admiration I have for him for sacrificing so much in the name of exposing the truth. The strength of character of this man is amazing to me. HE IS A HERO. Please pass on my admiration to him Bob. I feel a personal obligation to try to pay Mr X back at least a little bit by spreading the message and advocating veganism. His bravery in taking action that I know I could NEVER do (I am not strong enough) MUST not be in vain.

I want to write about this inspiring and sobering interview in my blog (I don’t have a blog yet but I will start one today!) If you have a transcript of Mr X’s comments would you be willing to send me a copy? If not, I will do one myself (with your permission of course!)

I don’t know why anyone should be surprised by HSUS “Hoofin it” event. HSUS has been leading up to an event like this for a long time. HSUS has been promoting “happy animal exploitation” and profiting from “happy animal products” for years now. They are just a PR branch of the animal use industry. I’m often astounded that any vegan would promote HSUS or support them, but sadly, many do.

  • From Joe Grundy on 03 August 2014

Its incredible where your thoughts take you when you don’t understand the point being made. FO was on the BBC to talk about sport – NOT veganism. The fact that she broke world records in the marathon was why she was on there & she is being honest when she says that veganism is not for all. Look around you & open your eyes – 1% are vegan? – 2% if you are lucky – Face it – most people just don’t give a toss about animal cruelty or the environment – or even themselves – listen “THEY DON’T CARE” – they will never go vegan. FO is reaching a mainstream audience – an audience who will switch off to being confronted with veganism as Sonja says above, but ‘some’ listening will be interested and that vegan seed or thought might just get planted so that in time the 1-2% becomes 3-5%. GFL approach works with “some” people, but not many (see 1% above) – there are other approaches, but those exploring them do not pillory those adopting their own approaches – it is a pity this doesn’t seem to work the other way – if only those determined to rip into fellow vegans spent their time & effort ripping into the CEO of McDonalds…

PS Sonia – I would urge you to read FO’s statement in the matter as what she actually said makes a whole lot of sense 🙂

  • From Phil on 03 August 2014

We should always present the positive truth about veganism which is that it is a healthy, compassionate lifestyle that is certainly “for everyone”. Tim Barford more or less conceded that he was mistaken in what he said previously so don’t crucify the guy. He’s achieved so much in promoting veganism and, in challenging him, one should do so respectfully with that in mind. The same with Fiona Oakes – she’s a stunning ambassador who has run through deserts and ice fields to showcase vegan power. We all say things sometimes that we may later prefer to change and I suspect that’s the case here. Gary Francione makes lots of good points but if he could tone down the confrontational and argumentative attitude, he would be ten times more effective in changing hearts and minds.
